Our First Roast

How we Prepare our Beans

We began roasting purely for the love of coffee. A family friend of ours who is a Benedictine monk owned a coffee tree and would let us pick some of the cherries from the tree, which contained the seeds or beans within the fruit. In a family effort, we would squeeze the wet beans from the small, red fruit and leave the beans out to dry. We then fashioned together a homemade one pound coffee roaster from a bread machine and a heat gun. Although it was makeshift, it did quite a remarkable job and gave us insight on how to transform the fresh coffee into the product we all know and cherish.

Mission-Driven Coffee Venture Begins

Our fervor for coffee increased all the more when my brother and I decided to go on a mission trip to Colombia through the Emiliani Project. In order to get to Colombia and raise money for the charity, we decided to sell coffee. We used our new contraption to roast one pound at a time and sell it to family and friends. Naturally we grew to prefer the freshly roasted coffee to anything else that was available and were able to source the raw coffee beans that were grown with values we share. So we upgraded to a professional six-pound roaster and set off on our new venture.

Today we roast green coffee beans in the same small six-pound batches which allows us to perform as specialty roasters and ensure the quality of the coffee. We source the best coffee we can find that is always organic, and still support organizations that are doing good around the world, so when you order from Bonsall Bean Co. you can rest easy knowing your morning cup of coffee is supporting your community (and you can really rest easy if you are drinking our decaf option).
